Campaigning suspended as Worcester remembers terror attack victims

THE UNION flag is flying at half-mast over Worcester Guildhall as the city remembers the 22 people killed in the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena.

Campaigning has also been suspended in the General Election following Monday night’s attack.

A suspected suicide bomber used an improvised explosive device in the foyer as people were leaving a concert by Amercian superstar Ariana Grande.

A total of 22 people, including children, have lost their lives while a further 59 were injured in the attack.




Mayor of Worcester, Coun Steve Mackay, said: ““The attack and the events in Manchester will resonate across the nation.

“I’m sure that the people of Worcester will join me in expressing our sincere condolences to those who have suffered injuries, and lost loved ones. Our hearts go out to them.”


Worcester’s Conservative candidate, Robin Walker confirmed he had suspended his campaign and said: “Due to last night’s tragic events, I will be suspending all campaigning today.

“My thoughts and prayers with all those affected,” he added.

Labour candidate Joy Squires, said: “Tragic news from Manchester. My thoughts with everyone affected. Campaigning suspended today as a mark of respect. Stay Strong Manchester.

Liberal Democrat candidate Stephen Kearney said his prayers were with all those affected.

In a joint statement the Chief Constable for West Mercia Police, Anthony Bangham, and the Chief Constable for Warwickshire Police, Martin Jelley said: “Last night’s atrocity at the Manchester Arena has shocked and saddened us all and the thoughts of the officers, staff, special constables and volunteers within West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police are with those affected.

“It has been heart warming to see the people of Manchester come together to support each other and the emergency services. It is testimony to the overwhelming power of community spirit.

“Across the counties that we serve we regularly review our security measures and we will be doing this again today to ensure that all is being done to keep you and your families safe.

“It remains vital that the police and the public work together to combat terrorism.
