Campaigning residents to get a new crossing

AMBITIONS to get a crossing installed on a “hazardous” road in Warndon Villages are finally set to be realised.

Residents in the area have been calling for traffic calming measures to be introduced on Woodgreen Drive in a bid to improve people’s safety.

Work will now get underway to install a toucan crossing which highways bosses hope will ease fears as they look to get it up and running by April this year.

The crossing is part of a £6million scheme carred out by Worcestershire County Council, which would also see the creation of a left-hand filter lane from the northern end of Woodgreen Drive into Cotswold Way and improvements to the Middle Hollow/Tolladine Road junction.

Coun Andy Roberts, county councilllor for the area, welcomed the project as he said the crossing could also stop people from parking “inappropriately”.

“What we have always wanted is a proper crossing on Woodgreen Drive which will improve the route to the two schools in the area,” he said.

“It has often been a hazard to cross there, so we have wanted a crossing for sometime as it has the added benefit of controlling traffic speed along there.

“Also one of the problems we have is with people parking around the housing estate, so we hope this might encourage more people to leave their car at home and walk to the school.”

Martin Rowe, transport policy officer for Worcestershire Highways, said the scheme was part of the first phase of the multi-million pound Worcester Transport Strategy, which aims to secure improvements in vital infrastructure and support economic growth.

“The strategy requires us to improve access for all modes of transport between Lowesmoor and Cotswold Way as that is a main corridor into Worcester city centre,” he said.

“The purpose of the crossing is to provide a link between the residential areas and ultimately, in the longer term, it will lead on to the Worcester Technology Park when that is built.

Mr Rowe added: “We have deliberately placed that crossing in that area because it was where it was wanted so it made sense to put it there.

“Not only does it help local residents but it is also part of the bigger picture too, so it is one of those rare occasions when they dovetale together.”
