Call to bring in more skips

Rob George 1st Sep, 2018   0

A MONTHLY skip service to serve Tolladine and Gorse Hill residents could be on the cards after council chiefs unanimously backed plans to include the areas in the rota of collections.

Bulky waste is currently collected at eight sites across Worcester each month, with residents able to dispose of household waste not suitable to be compacted in rubbish trucks.

Council officials will now begin talks with the city’s refuse workers on extending the scheme, which is run voluntarily, after calls for action from Gorse Hill Conservative councillor Mohammed Altaf.

Coun Altaf organised a community clear-up day in Avon Road and Teme Road area earlier in the summer and paid for a skip out of his own pocket to begin the clean up of the area.

“We had a steady stream of people all day and by the evening the skip was full, we’ve removed a massive amount of rubbish which may well have been fly-tipped. It certainly proves the need and desire for a similar council run service,” he said.

“My residents in Gorse Hill don’t all have cars so can’t take their bulky waste to the Bilford Road tip. We’ve proven we can fill a skip in three hours.”

His calls attracted cross-party support and Coun Joy Squires, chair of Worcester City Council’s environment committee, said: “All of us share a desire to see the back of fly-tipping as soon as possible.”

Labour’s Coun Roger Berry’s amendment to include Rainbow Hil in the new skip schedule was accepted unanimously.

“In the past there was a skip in my area but it was removed because of the budget cuts imposed on this authority by the Government,” he said.

“I believe there is a need there and clearly we need to do all we can to ensure this gets off the ground and help residents take pride in their local area.”
