Building on sustainable skills in Worcester with new purpose-built facility

A PURPOSE-built training facility, that will provide opportunities for the local community to learn sustainable construction skills, has officially opened in Worcester.

Located next to The Green Hub community centre in Dines Green, the newly completed Building Block Two includes a workshop, classroom, reception area, toilets and a storeroom.

Building work started in July and contractors Barnwood Ltd have now completed the project.

The new centre builds on the success of the original Building Block, located on Shap Drive next to the Warndon Hub community centre, which has already supported hundreds of learners in gaining construction skills.

The initiative forms part of the Worcester Town Investment Plan and was made possible through Government funding, following a successful bid by Worcester City Council.

David Blake, the city council’s managing director, said: “Our Town Investment Plan was focused on enhancing training opportunities within our community centres.

“These centres play a vital role in bringing people together, offering support and learning for residents of all ages.

“It’s fantastic to see Building Block Two come to life, providing even more chances for people to develop valuable new skills.

“We hope this facility will support Worcester’s construction industry and help equip residents with the skills they needed to thrive.”

Sustainable construction techniques focus on methods to minimise the environmental impact that buildings can have, by using eco-friendly materials and energy saving systems.

The training centre is being leased to Worcester Community Trust, who operate the existing Building Block facility and six community hubs in Worcester on behalf of the city council.

GLP Training, a nationally recognised apprenticeship training provider, currently provide training at the Building Block, and will also deliver training from Building Block Two.

Gemma Parsons, CEO of GLP Training added: “This new centre represents a fantastic opportunity not only to support local individuals and employers with high-quality training, but also to attract students and businesses from across the UK to the area.

“We’re proud to play a role in developing the region’s skills, strengthening the local workforce, and contributing to the wider economic growth of Worcestershire.

“Building Block Two will be a vital hub for developing essential, in-demand skills – particularly in plumbing, carpentry, sustainability, and retrofit, where there are critical shortages not only locally, but nationwide.”
