Bringing African experience to talk

A FORMER GP who worked in Africa and at one point was the only doctor covering an area the size of England has been invited to give the 2017 annual Medical Lecture at Worcester’s Guildhall.

Dr David Webster, who will be giving the public lecture next Tuesday (April 18) at the invitation of Worcester’s Mayor, grew up in Kenya before studying medicine at University in the UK.

He then returned to Africa in the 1960s, working first as a doctor in north east Uganda and then in northern Kenya, where he was the only doctor covering a 24,000 square mile area – roughly the size of England.

The population of that area was around 75,000 back in the 60s and David was able to travel around the country with assistance from the Flying Doctor service, where he often held surgeries underneath the wings of the plane.

He has treated patients suffering from numerous tropical diseases, malaria and kala-azar – a parasitic killer.

Dr Webster returned to the UK when his children reached secondary school age, and worked as a GP in an Upton-upon-Severn surgery for 30 years.

Coun Paul Denham, Mayor of Worcester, said: “Dr Webster has had a fascinating career and I know that this lecture will be very engaging. Everyone is welcome – if you’ve never attended a medical lecture before, then make this your first.”

The lecture will start at 7pm and tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for students which include a glass of wine or soft drink.

Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre at the Guildhall and the Mayor’s Office on [email protected] or call 01905 722001
