FUEL prices for motorists across Worcestershire continue to rise as the AA reveal the average price has topped 148p for the first time ever.
New figures from the AA also show the cost of diesel has also risen with commuters in such vehicles now shelling out on average of £151.7p since last Thursday
While the previous high in the price of petrol of £147.2p was set on November 21, the new high in the price of diesel came after the previous figure of £151.10 was set just 24 hours ear
The previous records were 147.72p for petrol, set on November 21 last year, and 151.10p for diesel, set a day earlier.
Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman, said: “The cost of living crisis has been ratcheted up yet another notch, tightening the vice on family spending when it faces other pressures from impending domestic energy cost and tax increases.”
Prices have jumped in recent days as concerns grow that the Ukraine crisis could have an impact on supply.
But the cost of wholesale fuel has been rocketing for some time, amid a surge in demand as the global economy slowly reopens.
On Monday morning, Brent crude oil prices surged to a new seven-year high of more $95.40 (about £70.50) per barrel.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Petrol has unfortunately hit a frightening new high of 148.02p, which takes filling a 55-litre family car to an eye-watering £81.41.
“With the oil price teetering on the brink of $100 a barrel and retailers keen to pass on the increase in wholesale fuel quickly, new records could now be set on a daily basis in the coming weeks.
“As a result, drivers in the UK could be in for an even worse ride as pump prices look certain to go up even more.”
