A TALENTED Worcester apprentice has scooped a prestigious accolade at a celebrated county awards ceremony.

Alex Tyrer recently won the ‘Higher Apprentice of the Year’ award at the 2016 Worcestershire Apprenticeship Awards, after completing his higher accountancy apprenticeship with Sanctuary Group.

The city-based leading housing and care provider’s national apprenticeship programme has been running for nine years, during which time more than 1,300 young people have been supported into work.

Apprentices on the programme include placements in finance, IT, business and administration, health and social care, housing, maintenance and horticulture.

The 22-year-old said: “The apprenticeship programme at Sanctuary has been a great platform for my career. I’m extremely thankful for the support I’ve received throughout and I’m proud to have this award.”

Michelle Wood, group head of learning and development at Sanctuary, said: “I’m delighted Alex’s achievements have been recognised in this way.

“The continued success achieved by our apprentices reflects the positive impact our apprenticeship scheme is having on both our business and young people’s careers.

“These two things alone highlight how valuable apprenticeships are in developing new talent for the future.”
