A welcome gift of inspirational books

Worcester Editorial 7th Dec, 2018   0

STUDENTS at Christopher Whitehead Language College and Sixth Form were handed a boost with the gift of new books after a visit from an inspirational speaker during the school’s Citizenship Day.

The donation came after female students in years 10 to 12 welcomed Nicola Whiting into school in September to talk about ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and her extraordinary life story so far.

Alison Falconer represented Nicola to deliver the books they bought for the school’s students following Nicola’s inspirational talk

The books were chosen by the students after identifying an aspect of their life that they would like some help with.

Topics ranged from organisation, motivation, high aspirations and being a great leader.

In addition to the books with thoughtful and personal messages for the students, there were also enough extra books to start the school’s own ‘Success Library’ covering topics such as managing anxiety, altruism, influential people and leadership.

“We were awed by Nicola’s talk to the students and the impact it had. To be given this extra opportunity for our students is incredible. I know this is going to make a difference and I’ll be borrowing a book myself this weekend,” said assistant head of sixth form Bethan Morgan.

The school’s Citizenship Day once again saw a more flexible approach to learning to help students prepare for the world outside school.

Former Worcester Warriors star Nick Baxter was among those in attendence and year 11 students visited a car crash scheme reconstruction as part of the Dying to Drive programme organised by Hereford and Worcester Fire service.

Students from Year 10 were put through their paces by the army who worked on team building activities while year nine students walked across the Malvern Hills to give them a taster of the schools’ highly successful Duke of Edinburgh programme.

Year eight pupils learned more about the environmental challenges to our world while year seven students were encouraged to learn good citizen skills from across ten different subjects.
