WHAT a year 2018 has been! Politics has been tough there can be no doubt, but at the end of the year we are a step closer to leaving the EU with a deal that works for our country and for all the heat and light in the debates in Westminster, we do so with our laws in good order, with a deal that protects citizens, and a good negotiated solution for our economy in sight.
Our local hospital continues to face great challenges in terms of demand but I am pleased to see new facilities delivered with the new discharge suite and more new beds due to open early in 2019. With the appointment of a new Chief Executive and the final part of the £29 million in capital due to be spent next year, our NHS should continue to improve and help the hardworking staff to deliver for local people.
The High Street has been buzzing since the Christmas Fayre and it has been good to see Worcester’s thriving independent shops so busy.
With unemployment close to record lows and wages rising, our economy remains strong. As schools put on their Christmas plays, it’s good to see more rated good and outstanding with a new school for North Worcester due to open next year.
After the year in which we remembered the centenary of the Great War ending, and Worcester welcomed the wonderful Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace exhibition as well as celebrating 30 years of Acorns Children’s Hospice, the city will also be fondly remembering the wonderful parade of painted giraffes for St Richard’s Hospice, an exhibition which really did help Worcestershire to stand tall.
At this time of year it’s always good to remember our wonderful array of local charities and the hugely important work that they do.
I wish everyone in Worcester a happy and successful 2019.
