£76,000 street washer to keep city gleaming

WORCESTER’S pavements are set to look cleaner than ever, thanks to a £76,000 investment in high-tech equipment.

Worcester City Council has splashed out on a new street washing machine, which will be in action from 5am every day of the week, cleaning away tree sap, fast food grease, bird droppings and anything else that sticks to paving slabs and cobbles.

The Schmidt Swingo 200+ sprays water and detergent on to the pavement, which is then scrubbed with three brushes in the front section of the vehicle. It also has a high pressure jet for confined spaces or particularly stubborn stains.

To find out for himself how the city’s streets are being made to shine, Coun Jabba Riaz, city council cabinet member for clean, green and leisure services, got behind the wheel.

He said: “It’s a great machine that does a really good job of bringing our pavements up looking shiny and new. It will make an important contribution to Worcester’s strong reputation as a clean and green city. That reputation is the result of people across Worcester keeping our city clean, not just our council staff, so I want to thank everyone who plays a part.”

Driver Bryan Rees, said: “It cleans very well, leaving the pavements bright and sparkly. It’s good to be able to make a big contribution to keeping our city clean.”

The new street washer will play a big part in maintaining the city’s strong reputation for cleanliness. Earlier this year, Worcester was named the cleanest city in England in Provident Personal Credit’s Unbroken Britain survey.
