SPORT organisations in Worcestershire and Herefordshire have been awarded £50,000 in funding to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 and to tackle inequalities.

The ‘Tackling Inequalities Fund’ forms part of Sport England’s £210million support package to help the sport and physical activity sector navigate through the pandemic.

Shortly after restrictions on exercising were introduced in March, Sport England conducted surveys to assess people’s activity levels and attitudes towards physical activity.

Certain groups admitted to being disproportionately affected and said Covid-19 was impacting their ability to be active and achieve.

With a strong understanding of local needs and issues, Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire has been identified to connect funding to community groups working with those most in need.

The cash injection focuses on impoverished areas, ethnically diverse communities, disabled people and those with long-term health conditions.

Stephen Brewster, chief executive officer at Active, said: “We are delighted to direct National Lottery funding to support the local sport and activity sector.

“This funding will help support our valuable community infrastructure which is vital in keeping our two counties active – physically and mentally.”
