City centre improvement work starts

Worcester Editorial 16th Apr, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

RECONSTRUCTION work costing £500,000 has begun on a historic part of Worcester city centre.

Improvements to the Cornmarket began last week as part of Worcestershire County council’s Worcester Transport Strategy in partnership with Worcester City Council and should be completed in the summer.

The scheme to boost the area involves the reconstruction of Queen Street (south), New Street (north) and the Cornmarket and will create better street lighter, new street furniture, public art, electrical supplies and improved loading and parking arrangements.

The project is being undertaken by a team of specialists using high quality materials in a contemporary design while attempting to keep its historic feel.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: “The work will build on the improvements already delivered in Lowesmoor, Angel Place and the High Street and will uplift the quality of the area, welcoming visitors to Worcester and creating a great place to visit, enjoy and do business

“It is hoped this will increase footfall in this area and along New Street, which will see increased economic benefits for businesses. The area will provide an inviting gateway to the network of unique city centre shopping streets leading from the Cornmarket square.”
