Student named as top young football coach

A TEENAGE student is shooting for the stars after being named by the Football Association as one of the top 15 coaches in the country.

Tom Rimmer, a first year student at Worcester Sixth Form College, has been recognised by the FA in the under 24 category and will attend the National Youth Sports Trust event at Loughborough University between Friday (December 19) and Tuesday (December 23).

The 17-year-old, who is studying PE, Biology, English Language and Psychology, contacted Zig Zag Coaching when he was just 13 to gain a week’s work experience and has never looked back since.

“Coaching has always interested me,” he said. “That is why I initially got involved in the placement, which was only supposed to be a week, but I carried on volunteering and now I have got a paid job out of it.

“It feels really good (to be recognised by the FA). It is a big achievement and has taken three years to get there, but I wasn’t expecting it, it was totally out of the blue.”

Tom is now a volunteer co-ordinator at the coaching company and has recently set up his own business called Premiership Parties, which aims to deliver young people birthday parties and events throughout the county.

He has also been selected as the vice-chair of the Worcestershire FA Council.

The National Youth Sports Trust event is set to take Tom, who is qualified to coach in football but can teach all sports, to the ‘next level’ of his career.

“This camp will bring the top 15 coaches together for all sports which will be an experience of elite players, coaches and officials from different sports,” he added.

“It will be good to hear the shared experiences, get some more training and meet some top level people, professional managers and coaches.

“I would like to eventually go down the route of setting up a large scale company of coaching or moving into PE to teach in that area.”

Anyone interested in contacting Tom can e-mail [email protected] and [email protected] or call 07788137652 and 07597845126.
