Nurturing a love of outdoors early on

Worcester Editorial 19th Dec, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

CHILDREN are set to experience the first outdoor kindergarten in the county when it opens its doors at a farm on the edge of Worcester.

Nurture Outdoor Kindergarten, based at Top Barn Farm in Holt Heath, will be the only one of its kind in Worcestershire and will cater for two to five-year-olds.

Promoting the value of outdoor experiences, the pre-school will draw inspiration from Scandinavian and German kindergartens. It will open from January next year between 8am and 5.30pm.

Making mud pies in the mud kitchen, finding art supplies for outdoor work, den making and baking snacks will all be on the agenda for youngsters.

Helen Reeve, early years teacher and co-founder of the kindergarten, said: “In recent decades, we know children have become less inclined to spend time outdoors learning vital physical, cognitive and emotional lessons from nature.

“This was one of the driving forces behind establishing Nurture Outdoor Kindergarten and our own approach to early years education.

“Our ‘nature nurtures’ approach is inspired by the philosophies of Scandinavian and German kindergartens and promotes the importance of outdoor experiences for young children.

“Through nature we are able to engage their senses, inspire curiosity, awe and wonder, and fuel creativity and imagination which are essential ingredients for exploration, learning and development.”
