Glaucoma event to help patients

Worcester Editorial 16th Oct, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A MEETING to help people with glaucoma better their understanding of the condition takes place tomorrow (Friday).

The free event hosted by Worcestershire Glaucoma Support Group will be led by Tarun Sharma, clinical lead for ophthalmology at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, who specialises in the condition.

About 15,000 people are affected by glaucoma and related conditions in the county but Mr Sharma said it still was not fully understood.

“Receiving a diagnosis for such conditions can instil many worries and concerns in patients and some find it difficult to focus on the questions they need to ask at the time of their consultation in hospital,” he said.

“This may lead to problems such as taking their medication incorrectly.”

The support group provides patient-to-patient interaction and networking which can help people feel less isolated and distressed.

It also provides access to the most current information regarding available treatments and share experiences with those who have undergone these treatments.

Mr Sharma added: “Previous meetings have proved really successful with good feedback from those who attended. The overall aim is to help improve outcomes of glaucoma interventions and improve the quality of life of all glaucoma patients and their relatives.”

The meeting takes place in the Charles Hastings Education Centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital from 9.45am until 12.30pm.

For more information on the meeting call 01905 733715.
