DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan says he will not allow his players to wallow in self-pity after Worcester Warriors suffered another agonising defeat in the Aviva Premiership.

Warriors looked set to celebrate their first win of the season, which would have heaped pressure on relegation rivals Newcastle Falcons, as they led London Wasps 11-6 with just seconds remaining.

But in the final move of the match on Friday night Worcester’s resistance was finally broken with Jake Cooper-Woolley going over, which former Warriors fly half Andy Goode converted to snatch a 13-11 victory.

Ryan said it was a painful defeat as his side slipped 12 points adrift of Newcastle, with five games left, but the Warriors boss insisted his players will bounce back as they prepare for their must-win clash away to Falcons on Sunday.

“The atmosphere in the changing room was not great on Friday night,” he said. “It did hurt and we did feel a bit sorry for ourselves. But I am refusing to let this group sit and wallow around in self-pity.

“When we feel sorry for ourselves like we did on Friday night we will do it privately and then we will come back to work and see what we can do next week.

“We needed to beat Wasps to change the dynamics of next week, but the maths still say ‘yes’, so we are going to give it a good crack.”

Ryan added: “We know the world is feeling sorry for us and tapping us on the back. But this group is pretty good and sometimes the only thing you can get out of this is that you go out with people you really respect.

“And there are people who I have worked with for the past six or seven months who I have got the utmost respect for.

“We will continue to fight like mad and I hope they can get that win because when you work that hard it is nice to get a reward at the end.”
