Warwick wants the fly-half spot

VERSATILITY has often been a tag attached to Paul Warwick during his career as the talented back has the ability to operate at fly half, centre and full back.

The former Australia Sevens international made a name for himself in the number 15 shirt at Munster as he helped the Irish outfit capture the Heineken Cup in 2008.

However, Warwick, who arrived at Sixways this summer, told The Standard there was only one jersey he was after at Worcester Warriors this season and that was the one he was in possession of last Saturday.

The 32-year-old was selected at fly half against Oyonnax and he is now determined to keep hold of the shirt, with Ignacio Mieres and Danny Gray also vying for it.

“I definitely see myself as a fly-half here as that was what I signed as,” Warwick said. “I get linked as being a full back following my days at Munster but we just played a style of rugby which suited myself and Ronan O’Gara playing in the same side.

“Ignacio has played international rugby and Danny Gray has been around the club for a long time, so we have got good depth here, with some young guys coming through as well.

“All I need to do, though, is look after myself and put together some consistent performances which I believe will be enough to hold down my place in the side.”

But Warwick has already given a head start to his rivals as a broken thumb picked up in pre-season ruled him out of action for the opening four games of the campaign.

The former Munster and Stade Francais star made his first Aviva Premiership appearance when he came on against Newcastle Falcons, which Warwick is keen to add to.

“It has been frustrating to come to a new club and not be there at the start of the season, but hopefully I am all good now and with a couple of European games behind me I can put myself into contention,” Warwick said.

“My two years with Stade Francais were difficult as the language barrier was huge and my daughter struggled at school, so those pressures have now alleviated, which is great for my family.
