Wales call for Adams as Warriors seek momentum

Worcester Editorial 17th Oct, 2018   0

WARRIORS wing Josh Adams has been included in Wales’ squad for the four-match Under Armour Series autumn internationals.

Adams is one of 37 players named in the squad to prepare for the matches against Scotland (November 3), Australia (November 10), Tonga (November 17) and South Africa (November 24) at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Adams, 23, made his Wales debut against Scotland in the Six Nations in February and has since won three more caps. He scored his first international try in the second Test against Argentina in Santa Fe in June to help Wales to a 30-12 victory.

The 23-year-old made his debut for Lllanelli in 2013 and made one appearance for Scarlets before he moved to Warriors the following year.

Since he arrived at Sixways, Adams has become a potent try-scorer. His try in the 52-7 victory over Bristol Bears nine days ago was Adams’ 20th in the Gallagher Premiership – putting him level with Bryce Heem and Miles Benjamin on the all-time list of Warriors’ try-scorers in the competition.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s European Challenge Cup match against Ospreys at Sixways (kick-off 3pm), head coach Rory Duncan revealed his delight at the call-up.

“I’m delighted for Josh. He works extremely hard and, from a coach’s perspective, he’s a nice guy to work with,” he said.

Warriors will be looking to make it two wins out of two in the competition following Saturday’s impressive 38-27 triumph in Paris against respected French outfit Stade Francais.

“It was great way to start the European campaign. I’m delighted with the efforts of the players and to start with five points away from home,” Duncan said.

“A number of players were hungry for their opportunity and we now have some good selection headaches.”

The Warriors chief said he expected the Welsh side to put out a strong side and urged his charges to back up their Parisian performance with another victory.

“They have done better in the Pro-14 so far this season than they did last season so it’s going to be a tough game,” he said.

Duncan lavished praise on his side and highlighted debutant Kai Owen’s peformance as one of the best.

“It was a great opportunity for him in Paris. He held his position in the scrum against some fair-sized props and got the penalty in the last scrum. He’s progressed in last four months and is a player for the future.”

The head coach confirmed Ashley Beck broke his leg during the win and was set to see a specialist to determine the severity of the injury.

He added: “Ben Te’o has trained this week and at this moment in time he is available for selection on Saturday, while Alafoti Faosiliva is recovering from a calf injury but close to fitness.”
