Talented trio thrilled by Sixways opportunity

NEW SIGNINGS Charlie Mulchrone, Joe Rees and Heath Stevens have said they can’t wait to begin the next chapter of their promising careers at Worcester Warriors.

The talented trio will arrive at Sixways in the summer along with Northampton Saints number eight Gerrit-Jan Van Velze as Warriors continue to add to their squad ahead of next season.

And scrum half Mulchrone, 24, who has been captaining RFU Championship leaders Rotherham Titans this season, said he was already relishing the chance to pull on a Worcester jersey.

“You only have to visit Sixways to see the facilities, management and quality of players to realise the environment being created at Worcester,” Mulchrone said.

“Dean’s vision for the club going forward is the perfect fit for my ambitions and I am certainly looking forward to being part of it. The opportunity was something I couldn’t turn down.”

Centre Stevens, 24, who is currently at Plymouth Albion, said he was “over the moon” to sign for Warriors, while tight-head Rees said he was keen to be part of the club’s long-term plan.

The 23-year-old, who has represented Wales at u18 and u20 level, will make the move from Ospreys where he has made 30 appearances.

“I am looking forward to starting the next part of my career this summer and I am excited by the challenge ahead,” Rees said.

“Dean Ryan has a clear idea of where he wants Warriors to go over the next few years and I am delighted that I will be part of that.”

The news of Worcester’s quadruple capture comes after they announced the signings of Gloucester duo Matt Cox and Ryan Mills last week. And director of rugby Dean Ryan believes the club are starting to reap the rewards of targeting a specific area in the transfer market.

“We need to bring in a younger English profile to be able to get the wheels of this club moving again,” Ryan said. “We also need to bring some people in who have more miles on the clock in the Premiership, but that experience needs to come with an ambassadorial role, like Jonathan Thomas, who has been successful over a long period.

“It has been difficult for ten years to recruit here, but what is different now is that we are looking at a specific market with a clear purpose.

“There is still plenty of time to go in the recruitment window and there are still a few places which we want to get right, but we are getting the majority of people bought into what we are trying to do which is pleasing.”
