Stalemate moves city out of relegation zone

WORCESTER City pulled themselves out of the Skrill Conference North relegation zone on Tuesday night (November 26) with a hard-earned point against in-form Guiseley at Aggborough.

In a game of few chances City came closest to scoring but keeper Steve Drench denied both Tyler Weir and Richard Taundry with good stops as the game ended goalless.

At the other end Ryan Boot was rarely called into action as a well marshalled home defence, including a home debut for Matt Regan, kept a sixth clean sheet of the season.

Guiseley started the game with the fluid passing that had seen them win five games on the bounce prior to this, but City worked tirelessly to frustrate their opponents.

With goal scoring opportunities few and far between Steven Leslie fired two strikes wide from the edge of the box before Aaron Williams flicked a header just wide of Drench’s post from an Ellis Deeney corner.

The second half started in much the same vein with both teams trying to play a passing game but neither found the killer instinct to make the breakthrough.

The first shot on target came after 62 minutes when Lions substitute Louie Swain struck an effort straight at Boot, which the on-loan keeper gathered with ease at the second attempt.

The hosts started to crank the pressure after that and Drench was forced to tip the ball away, after Weir’s cross-come-shot seemed to be looping in, and then showed good handling to keep hold of a stunning 25-yard volley from Taundry.

Ethan Moore also had a shot blocked late on and Guiseley threatened on the counter, but neither side could find a winner.

City manager Carl Heeley, said: “Guiseley are the form side and for me they’re one of, if not the, best passing side in the league so we set ourselves up to be difficult to break down. I thought we frustrated them and I can’t remember Ryan Boot having a save to make.

“It was a decent game for a 0-0, I thought both sides tried to play football with some good stuff but I think we looked more likely to win it in the second half.

“I thought we finished the stronger side but overall four points over the weekend is a good return and we’re happy with that.”
