Snape stays with City and targets new player-coach

WORCESTER City boss John Snape hopes to appoint a new player-coach within the next week as his plans for next season take shape.

Snape confirmed his own future remains with City this week and is determined to build on what he described as an equally tough and disappointing season in the Midland League Premier Division.

He has had talks with a potential player-coach and hopes to announce a positive response shortly before sitting down to get commitments from his current squad.

Snape will be having face-to-face talks next week but hopes to keep the majority while adding more strength in depth to the squad.

“There are also clubs chasing players at this time of the season and I know from experience that it’s best to let everyone have a think and try to get decisions. I’ve spoken to the players by phone and we will sitting down with them next weeks.

“I hope to keep the nucleus of the squad and we’ve got one or two targets in mind as well.”

City finished fourth as they had to regroup after being demoted to the Midland Premier but former Hereford, Bromsgrove, Halesowen Town, Stourbridge and City favourite Snape admits Worccester’s name will again make them a big scalp in the division. However, they must respond.

“We didn’t get up last season, which was our target, but it’s a very competitive league and one which will be tougher again next season because only one team will go up,” he said. “Playing Worcester City, opposition players raise their game.

“That’s the challenge myself and the players have to take on board. We need to show we’re good enough to go and win the league.

City have already drawn up a list of six friendlies before the new season which begins on August 4.

The warm-up games begin on July 7, with two teams playing at Malvern and Dudley Town, while City hope to add another home friendly at the Victoria Ground to add to a visit by Stourbridge.

Friendies: Saturday July 7 v Malvern Town, A, and v Dudley Town, A;

Saturday 14 v Shawbury United A; Saturday 21 v Redditch United, A; Tuesday 24 v Cradley Town, A; Saturday 28 v TBC, H; Tuesday 31 v Stourbridge, H
