Rhodes asks for more consistency

WORCESTERSHIRE director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, has challenged his side to build on their best performances from last season.

With just over a fortnight to go until the club’s opening fixture at Hampshire, Rhodes said his side needed to be more consistent than the 2013 campaign when they finished fifth in Division Two of the County Championship.

Rhodes said there was a growing sense of excitement at the club especially after seeing Moeen Ali win a place in England’s Twenty20 World Cup squad.

“The 2013 season was certainly an up and down season,” Rhodes said.

“Part of that was because we couldn’t get a lot of consistency.

“But we must take confidence from some of the victories, particularly some of the one-day victories at Hove, Trent Bridge and Edgbaston.”

Rhodes added he thought his side could also do well in the revamped domestic Twenty20 competition.

“Again in the Twenty20 it was up and down,” he said.

“If we could only string together the type of performances we put up against Somerset, a really good Twenty20 side. Beating them home and away in one year was a real achievement.

“We showed a lot of glimpses. We also beat the eventual winners in Northants. We can do it, the players know they can do it, the dressing room know they can do it.

“We just need to do it a little bit more consistently. That is how we are going to improve as a side.”
