Promotion is likely to mean more new faces

DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan says Worcester Warriors could make further signings in the summer if they secure promotion to the Aviva Premiership.

Warriors, who are currently second in the Greene King IPA Championship, have so far announced seven players who will be joining the club at the end of the campaign.

Ryan said he was pleased with the way his side was shaping up for next season as he revealed he still had two more new recruits to unveil.

But he admitted the outcome of May’s play-offs could force him to return to the transfer market to try and bolster his squad ahead of what could be a season in the top flight.

“I think we are pretty happy with where we are as there are a couple of people who still need to be announced,” he said.

“We have got three or four players who will come in and add value and one or two which have real experience and intellect.

“If we do that every year we will get stronger, so we are in a reasonably good place now and then next year we will be in an even better place and that’s what we have got to keep doing all the time.

“I think there are (enough players). But I think the play-off situation and the outcome of that will allow some time for reflection and see if we need to add a little bit more.

“I also think the World Cup is a chance to look at things in a slightly different way. But we will make those decisions over the summer.”

The latest player to be revealed by the club is giant lock Darren Barry who has agreed to leave Cornish Pirates and join Warriors.

And Ryan believes the 25-year-old, who stands at 6ft 6in and weighs 120kg, would be able to add further power to his forward pack for the 2015/16 campaign.

“We watched him last year, but he extended at Cornish Pirates,” Ryan added.

“We saw him here and he played pretty well against us.

“He is mobile, a decent footballer and calls the lineouts well, so we saw a lot of things we thought we could work with.

“Those sorts of players don’t come along that often, so we thought we would act now.”
