Percival holds fire on new deal

INFLUENTIAL lock James Percival has revealed he would not make a decision on his Worcester Warriors future until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old, whose contract runs out in the summer, was part of the Warriors side who defeated Doncaster Knights 35-5 on Friday to claim the British & Irish Cup.

It was also the first trophy the Worcester academy graduate has picked up since his return to his boyhood club in 2011 after spells with Harlequins and Northampton Saints.

“It feels great,” Percival said. “During the comings and goings in my career I have always wanted to achieve stuff with Worcester and hopefully we can now get into the Premiership and go forward and be a successful club.”

But asked whether he would be would be at the club next season, Percival added: “I will decide (on my future) at the end of the season.”

The experienced second row, who has made 82 appearances for Warriors, said he was committed to returning the club to the Aviva Premiership and he believed his side’s convincing victory in the B&I Cup final would give them an extra confidence boost heading into next month’s play-offs.

“This is massive for the club,” he added. “Obviously we should have won the A League final, but we learnt from that and obviously the boys have come out and have got that winning feeling in Worcester.

“We have learnt that finals rugby is different to week-in, week-out rugby. You have got to go out and express yourself, but a final is about winning and we did that.

“I don’t know whether this will give us an edge on Bristol, but it will give a good feeling around the club and the experience of winning in a final.

“All the boys who have been watching will now want to get that feeling as well, so it breeds.”
