WORCESTER Warriors star Chris Pennell believes his experience with England will take his game to a new level.
The 27-year-old earned his place in Stuart Lancaster’s touring party to New Zealand after a superb season for the Sixways side.
Pennell, who was nominated for the Aviva Premiership Player of the Year Award, admitted he has found the speed and intensity of training “hugely challenging” since joining up with the national team.
But the former Warriors skipper insisted the tour would make him a better player as he aims to land his first England cap this summer.
“These guys are operating at an extremely high level, so in order to keep up with them I have had to raise my game,” he said.
“But I am loving every minute. I have been learning a huge amount as there is some incredibly talented players here, but I am mostly excited about getting out on the pitch and having them on my side as opposed to playing against them for once.
“Training is more intense, the speed of ball is faster and athletically these guys are a cut above the rest, so I have been trying my best to keep up with them which has been good fun and I am getting there.”
Pennell said he has also been relishing the battle with England ace Mike Brown for the full back spot ahead of their first test against the All Blacks in Auckland on Saturday.
“I don’t think there is anybody in world rugby who could be tougher competition than Mike Brown for that 15 jersey so it is a huge challenge for me,” Pennell added.
“But personally I think this environment and being around people like Mike will certainly take my game to the next level and it really excites me to think about where I could reach in the future.
“I just need to make sure I really give everything now I have been given this opportunity.”
