WORCESTER Wolves forward Alex Owumi has told the Observer it is important the team do not look too far ahead of themselves despite the club enjoying their best ever start to a BBL Championship campaign.
Wolves extended their one hundred per cent winning record to six league games and maintained their position as leaders of the BBL Championship after beating the Eagles 80-71 away from home on Friday.
With maximum points from their first six games, Wolves are the only unbeaten side in the league and currently sit two points clear at the top of the table ahead of last year’s winners Leicester Riders.
The forward told the Observer Friday’s hard-earned win was their best of the season so far.
“It was a great effort from the guys especially from a defensive point of view because Newcastle are one of the top teams in the league,” he said.
“We didn’t play up to our standards in the third quarter but we managed to pull together in the fourth and come out on top.
“It’s important we take each game at a time and we can’t afford to get too ahead of ourselves. We’ve only played six games so far and there are plenty more to come.
“There is a great buzz around the team at the moment and the new players who have come in are really enjoying being part of the team.”
Next up for Wolves is a return to the University of Worcester Arena when they face the Plymouth Raiders on Friday (tip-off 7.30pm).
Another player really looking forward to Friday’s clash is Wolves’ new man Andreas Schreiber who was released by the south coast franchise earlier this season before joining Paul James’ squad.
“I’m excited about Friday,” he said. “Obviously the match will be a little bit personal but you always want to keep personal feelings to a minimum.
“They’re a good bunch there and they have some great players such as Shane Walker who I count as one of my better friends.
“We’re going to have to push hard to win but we’ll get it done.”
**WOLVES forward Will Creekmore has been named the Molten BBL Player of the Month following impressive performances at the start of the BBL Championship campaign.
