Old coach James facing an early Wolves reunion

WORCESTER Wolves fans have been reassured the club will be building its squad for the new campaign which begins with a visit from former Wolves chief Paul James.

James will bring his Plymouth Raiders to the University of Worcester Arena on Friday, September 21 (7.30pm) to kick off Wolves’ 2018/19 British Basketball League campaign.

It will be a rapid reunion for the 53-year-old who ended his eight-and-a-half year reign as Wolves boss last month to become Plymouth’s head coach and director of basketball.

His successor has yet to be appointed by Wolves chiefs. The University of Worcester is currently advertising for a new director of basketball, to incorporate the role of head coach of the BBL Men’s squad, along with a basketball development officer.

“We are already attracting some very high-calibre applicants who have outstanding potential to build on the success of the university’s extensive basketball programme, from grass roots to elite level, including the Wolves’ Men’s BBL team,” the statement read.

“During the recruitment and selection process, the club will continue to build its squad for the coming season through the expertise of Mick Donovan, managing director and co-founder of the Worcester Wolves and head of the University’s Institute of Sport and Exercise Science.

“Mick, who has Basketball England senior coach status, will be assisted by Dr Alejandro Vaquera, whom Wolves fans will remember when he flew from Spain to coach the Wolves during the play-offs in 2017 when Paul James was unable to coach due to a close family bereavement.

“Dr Vaquera is a very distinguished sports scientist with outstanding basketball knowledge and experience in Europe, the United States and internationally.”

Wolves will take on new franchise London City Royals at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Saturday, November 3 (7.30pm).

The regular season will close on Sunday, April 28 with Worcester travelling to Cheshire (5.30pm) before the play-offs begin the following week.
