Nti fires City to Histon victory

A FINE brace from Daniel Nti earned Worcester City a vital 2-1 win at Histon in the Skrill Conference North on Saturday (January 11).

The striker bagged a goal in each half to ensure Carl Heeley’s men laid to rest their 6-1 humbling at Bradford Park Avenue and got back to winning ways, with Zak Mills grabbing a consolation for the hosts.

The City manager added to his side last week and all three new recruits, Aaron Brown, Jamie Grimes and Kristian Ramsey-Dickson, started to help the Blue and Whites leapfrog rivals Gloucester City into 20th place.

The new-look Worcester team started the game rejuvenated and took the lead after just two minutes when Ramsey-Dickinson held the ball up well and teed up Nti whose sweet strike found the top corner.

The visitors sustained their pressure and man-mountain Brown tested Calum Kitscha from range before the former Kidderminster utility player was again denied by the Histon ‘keeper after a goal-line scramble.

The Stutes turned the screw as the first period came to a close, with George Williams clearing off the line before Jose Veiga saved well from Charlie Day.

Nti doubled his side’s advantage nine minutes into the second half when Williams’ right-wing cross was dispatched by the man who hadn’t found the net since his winner at Stalybridge Celtic on November 23.

Histon responded immediately when Day’s in-swinging free kick was prodded home by Mills to half the deficit.

From there on the home side laid siege to the City goal with Omar Beckles having a header cleared off the line by Ellis Deeney before Veiga once again proved to be the hero when saving brilliantly from Kaine Sheppard.

The City rearguard repelled everything thrown at them and substitute Ethan Moore almost put the icing on the cake but was denied at the near post with five minutes remaining.

Manager Heeley said: “Danny stepped up and did very well today. He’s been working hard and I’m delighted for him. We are in trouble but there is a long way to go and we will scrap till the end.

“The three new faces have been a breath of fresh air and gave everyone a lift at the club. Brown was a man mountain today, every time the ball went into the Histon box they couldn’t deal with him, he was the most effective player on the pitch today.”

City will be looking to record back to back league wins for the first time this season when they host Colwyn Bat at Aggborough on Saturday, January 18.
