New boy Vuna keen to make a flying start

NEW RECRUIT Cooper Vuna has spoken of his determination to take Worcester Warriors “back to where they belong” as he looks to help them with their promotion push.

The exciting wing, who has made two appearances for Australia, has agreed to leave Japanese side Toshiba Brave Lupus to join Warriors with immediate effect.

Vuna, who has also enjoyed a successful career in rugby league, is set to be available for Warriors’ final six league games of the season and the 27-year-old said he was looking forward to helping the Greene King IPA Championship leaders secure a return to the Aviva Premiership.

“I’ve recently been following Worcester Warriors and their progress to make it back to the Premiership,” he said. “Seeing the team’s dynamic and style makes me excited to get over there and amongst it.

“I can’t wait to get out on the field and help the team push through and back to where they belong.

“I know that under the guidance of Dean Ryan and the other coaches I’ll be able to further improve my knowledge of rugby as well as my game.”

Before his move to Japan, Vuna spent three years with Super Rugby side Melbourne Rebels, during which time he became the top try-scorer in the club’s history.

He also came to the attention of Australia coach Robbie Deans during his time in Super Rugby and won two caps for his country in the summer of 2012 when the Wallabies hosted Wales in a three-match series.

And director of rugby Ryan believes Vuna, who has previously played international rugby league for Tonga, will be a “valuable” addition to his side.

“Cooper is an extremely exciting player who has experience with Australia at the very top of the game so we are delighted the challenge of moving to English rugby is something that appeals to him,” he said.

“He is aware of the direction in which this club is moving and will be a valuable player for us as we approach the business end of the season.”
