We must stick with what we have - Ryan

DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan says Worcester Warriors will not push the boat out to add further quality to his squad despite admitting funds were available.

Nine points now separate Worcester and second bottom London Irish after Bath condemned the Sixways side to a seventh straight defeat.

And while the Exiles have bolstered their ranks in recent weeks with the additions of experienced Wales international Ian Gough and talented Australian fly half James O’Connor, Ryan said Warriors will not be following suit.

The Worcester boss has previously questioned whether his players can find the catalyst within themselves to kick-start their season, but he insisted there was nobody available who could help his group steer clear of relegation nor add to the club’s long-term plans.

“There is always scope to bring people in,” Ryan said. “But most people available now either won’t contribute to this group because that is why they are available or they will be here for two or three years for the wrong reasons.

“If we get tied up in something like that financially we will end up in the same position year after year. It would not be the right statement for this club.”

Ryan said the club has made a decision to focus on building for the future rather than attaining players who were coming to the end of their careers.

And the former England back row was adamant they will not move away from that stance despite their worrying league position.

“This club has taken a different direction because it doesn’t feel that the previous approach has made any difference,” he added.

“That might mean we have got to weather the storm, but that is what I have come here to do and I am not going to deviate from that now.

“We have gone round and round and round, year after year after year and not one of them has solved anything.

“This club has to go back to getting the right people in the middle of it and it needs to grow youngsters around it.”
