Mieres wants to fight for his place

OUT OF favour fly half Ignacio Mieres has refused to give up hope on regaining the number ten jersey at Worcester Warriors despite slipping down the pecking order.

The Argentine marksman had been director of rugby Dean Ryan’s preferred choice at stand off as he started in all but one of Worcester’s opening 12 Aviva Premiership games.

But with Warriors still searching for their first win of the season in February, Ryan handed Paul Warwick the fly half spot and Chris Pennell the kicking tee before signing Ryan Lamb from Leicester Tigers.

Since then chances have dried up for the former Exeter Chiefs star, who failed to even make the bench against Bath, but Mieres said he understood Ryan’s decision.

“It is difficult when things don’t go well for the team,” he said. “Yes, we have rotated a bit this season, but that’s fine because when you don’t find answers coaches need to try something different and that’s what they did.

“I still feel very involved with this squad. I have played over 20 games, so it is not as if I am not playing.

“I thought it was OK when Ryan (Lamb) arrived as it is just more competition which is healthy. He has got a lot of experience playing in the Premiership, so I think it was a positive move by the club.”

And Mieres, who has still got one more year left on his contract, said he believed his rivalry with Lamb will continue to flourish. The 27-year-old’s fellow Argentine Mariano Galarza will be leaving in the summer, but Mieres told the Observer he would not be following his teammate out of the Sixways exit doors.

“I would like things to be better rugby-wise as I want to be involved with a successful team and I want to play in the Premiership,” he said.”But I am very happy with the club as they have been very good to me.

“My contract has also not finished, so I will be here next year.”

Mieres added: “This is probably the biggest challenge I have face in my career because the challenge before was to get into the top six.

“But I am relishing it and I absolutely believe we can get out of this. You always see teams from the bottom beating a top four or top six team. It has happened before, so why not now.”
