McKay in line for return

WORCESTER Warriors are set to turn to former Australia attack coach Jim McKay to help strengthen their push for promotion.

McKay arrived at Sixways in late February where he acted as a coaching consultant for a five-week period before heading back to his home country.

Director of rugby Dean Ryan revealed the club were set to hold talks with him about possibly returning to England to help Warriors through the end-of-season play-offs in May.

“He was only here for five weeks, so he has gone home,” he said. “He was always going home and then we were going to have conversations about bringing him back during the play-offs.

“We had two windows of opportunity and that’s always been the case.”

Ryan’s decision to bring McKay on board follows the promotion of Sam Vesty as backs coach and the departure of Shane Howarth.

And the Warriors boss believed the experienced coach, who was part of Australia’s backroom staff when the Wallabies reached the Rugby Championship final last year, was a valuable asset to his coaching team.

“I thought he was great,” Ryan added. “It was a great exercise to have a third pair of eyes looking at you because sometimes I don’t think you see the things you have set up yourself.

“We wanted to access his intellect and for him to be a mentor for Sam (Vesty) and be a sounding board for me and Carl (Hogg).

“I think it worked perfectly as the players also enjoyed him being here, so we will look to bring him back and do the same again at a time when we could do with an extra pair of hands.”
