Lemon nets winner as City squeeze through

WORCESTER City Youth continue to defy the odds as they made it through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup following a 1-0 victory over Halesowen Town last night (Wednesday).

James Lemon scored the only goal of the game after 75 minutes in a rain-soaked evening to set up a dream tie away to Sheffield United in the next round.

Manager Mark Owen said it was “unbelievable” achievement for the club to progress in a competition they had previously failed to get beyond the qualifying stages in.

“The first goal was to try and get to the first round of the FA Youth Cup and we have surpassed that,” Owen said. “We’ve had three clean sheets in three matches and dominated the games, so I couldn’t be more proud of the lads.

The former City striker said the referee had threatened to call their match against Halesowen off as rain continued to fall in Studley before Lemon netted the winner.

And Owen could not hide his delight about facing a side of Sheffield’s stature as well as the potential prospect of playing at Bramall Lane.

“It’s our cup final,” he added. “We can just go into the game knowing what we have achieved we can be proud of – win, lose or draw there’s no pressure on the lads as they’ve been fantastic.

“Other than Wolves it’s probably the biggest tie in the second round, so we can’t ask for any more. If they win it’s a dream come true, if they don’t we have done ourselves proud.”

Worcester City Youth’s tie away to Sheffield United is scheduled to take place before November 23
