Warriors look to strengthen as injury woes continue

WORCESTER Warriors are poised to dip into the transfer market as their injury problems continue to mount up.

The Sixways side appear to have suffered another set back after Argentina international Leonardo Senatore was forced off with a rib injury during Warriors’ 26-10 defeat to Sale Sharks.

His likely absence is set to leave director of rugby Dean Ryan with limited options at back row when take on Northampton Saints at Sixways on Saturday (3pm), with flanker Jake Abbott and number eight Semisi Taulava ruled out for several months due to injury.

Speaking before Worcester’s visit to Sale last Friday, Ryan revealed the club were on the look out for a back row to bolster his depleted squad.

“We may have to look in the market on injury dispensation, but it is not a great time and I am reluctant to bring people here that don’t add to this place,” Ryan said.

“I would rather look at other players around here, but if I found somebody and if I felt they offered something then we may have to look at that because we are pretty thin in that department.

“The players who are available now are not necessarily right, but you never know – there is always something which might crop up. There might be an opportunity of loan or somebody who can fill that gap, so we have got a couple of ideas. But I am really reluctant to through a body at this place.”

Ryan said they may have to look overseas to find a replacement for Abbott, who he believes could be out of action for up to six months after sustaining anterior cruciate knee ligament damage.

However, the Warriors boss insisted he was willing to give rising star Richard de Carpentier (RDC) a chance to stake his claim, while he also feels academy ace Andrew Boyce, who was named in the u18 England squad, could be an option.

The 18-year-old flanker has impressed in the A League and Ryan said he could be tempted to offer the flanker his Aviva Premiership debut.

“We will go to RDC and if it is not right we will go to Boyce,” Ryan added.

“Andrew’s been brilliant in the A League, so why not?

“It is not necessarily ideal, but it is better than bringing someone in who just layers over the top when Boyce could actually do a better job.

“But we will have to wait and see.”
