I’ll leave Warriors Women in a better position – Davies

WARRIORS Women outgoing director of rugby Roy Davies has reflected on his two-and-a-half seasons at the helm at Sixways after club chiefs revealed he would leave his post by mutual consent.

The Welshman was relieved of his duties by club owners Jason Whittingham and Colin Goldring last Friday after Warriors were beaten 47-10 at Wasps FC Ladies in their opening match of the new season.

Davies will remain in the job until his successor is appointed and oversaw the 48-7 defeat to Harlequins Women.

The director of rugby has been in charge of Warriors Women since they joined the new Tyrrells Premier 15s competition two years ago, having previously coached Bristol Ladies.

Davies said he was happy with the work he has overseen and claimed the foundations of the women’s section of the club were in a much stronger position than the one he inherited.

“New ownership has brought a new impetus to drive Warriors Women forwards and I believe it is a good time for me to hand the reins over to someone else whilst I seek a new challenge,” he said.

“In the immediate future I will be putting all my energy into ensuring everything is in place to allow my successor to be successful.”

Warriors Women were winless in their first season in the Tyrrells Premier 15s and had to wait until the last two matches of last season before they secured their first victories, the first coming at Firwood Waterloo and the second at home to Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.

With the RFU implementing new minimum standards, including on-field results, for the existing ten Tyrrells Premier 15s clubs and prospective new teams seeking admission it is likely there will be promotion and relegation at the end of this season, a move which forced Warriors club chiefs to call time on his reign.

“Roy has worked hard to establish Warriors Women in the Tyrrells Premier 15s league over the last two seasons,” said co-owner Goldring.

“We have supported Roy by introducing match fees for players this season, encouraging a more professional approach from the players and helping us to attract high calibre players.

“Historically, our results have been disappointing. With the performance of clubs, both on and off the pitch, under increased scrutiny from the RFU we need to ensure that Warriors Women remain a Tyrrells Premier 15s club.

“We thank Roy for his unstinting efforts since he arrived at Sixways and we wish him all the best for his future ventures.”
