Hughes’ return to lift goal-shy City

CITY boss Carl Heeley hopes the return of striker Lee Hughes will aid his side ahead of two home games in the Vanarama National League North.

The Blue and Whites have failed to score during the forward’s three-game ban following his red card at FC Halifax but City’s top scorer will be available for the visits of Gainsborough Trinty on Saturday and Alfreton Town on Tuesday.

Heeley’s men had a Bank Holiday weekend to forget as a home 1-0 reverse to Chorley on Saturday was followed by defeat by the same score at Stockport County on Monday, a loss which sent City to the foot of the table.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that since Lee Hughes has been suspended we haven’t scored a goal,” Heeley said of his frontman who has scored three of City’s five goals this season.

Heeley was again left frustrated by decisions which he believe he went against his team during the clash with County but also pointed the finger at his own team.

“I think there is a lack of quality in certain areas,” he said.

“You cannot criticise people for that and there is certainly not a lack of effort or desire in the dressing room.

“We get into situations and we are not making the most of them.”

City had numerous great opportunities to take the lead in Greater Manchester through Ebby Nelson-Addy and Richard Batchelor but the final ball was lacking on each occasion.

The deadlock was broken in the 41st minute with a brilliantly-struck Danny Lloyd free-kick curled into the top left corner.

The second half was a much more one-sided affair with all the pressure coming from Stockport. Amis had numerous chances to finish the game off, but didn’t make any of them count.

Only brave keeping from Ethan Ross denied Stockport a deserved second goal late on as Marsden was through with acres of space before Ross came out to deny the forward.

City welcome Gainsborough to the Victoria Ground on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.
