Heem shares journey with Clee Hill youngsters

Worcester Editorial 7th Dec, 2018   0

WARRIORS winger Bryce Heem introduced youngsters to rugby and passed on important tips from his professional career during an inspiring visit to Clee Hill Community Academy.

The visit to the Shropshire school by the Gallagher Premiership star was organised by Cleobury Mortimer-based Specialist Foundations Ltd, who are one of Warriors’ player sponsors.

Heem addressed the youngsters at their morning assembly and told them about the highs and lows of his rugby career which began in his native New Zealand.

He had to spend a year out of the game because of a shoulder injury but made a successful return to action and won a Commonwealth Games silver medal in Glasgow in 2014 with the New Zealand Sevens squad.

During his year out of rugby Heem had the opportunity to re-set the goals for the rest of his life and his impressive form when he resumed playing led to him being selected by the Auckland provincial side.

The popular Heem, who is in his fourth season with Warriors, praised the strict fitness regime of former New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens for helping to transform his career.

Heem played Super Rugby for the Chiefs where his form brought him to the attention of Warriors who brought him to England.

He also stressed to the youngsters the importance of healthy eating, working hard and being disciplined.

After the assembly Heem officially opened a new outdoor gym at the school and then gave the youngsters the chance to demonstrate their own rugby skills with a coaching session in the mist and snow.
