WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley has heaped praise his side’s defensive stability over the course of their Skrill Conference North season.
The Blue and Whites have conceded just 46 goals in the league, a feat only bettered by five teams, and with 17 clean sheets in all competitions, Heeley’s men have built around a solid back five.
A host of centre halves have graced the Aggborough pitch this season, eight in total, which Heeley believed made the tally even more impressive.
And after two clean sheets in their last three outings, the City boss said he was delighted with his back line.
“If you’re not going to win a game you make sure you’re not going to lose it and you can’t do any more than keep a clean sheet,” he said.
“That’s a statistic we’re proud of and you should be proud of it, every player in that squad that’s played a part should be proud of keeping clean sheets because as a former defender you take pride in them.
“If we can get up to 20 clean sheets in all competitions that’s an unbelievable, unbelievable statistic.”
In stark contrast to that, the inability to convert chances leaves Worcester as the second lowest scorers in the division, something Heeley said he was all too aware of.
“We’ve come to the end of March now and if you look at the goals for column that’s been our problem because if we’d scored more goals we’d be a lot higher up the league with our defensive record,” he added.
“It hasn’t happened for us in front of goal and that’s been a frustration generally.”
