Hayden is star of the future

TWO Worcester students enjoyed success at the national final of the American Golf Junior Championships.

Hayden Sarfo, of Kings Hawford School, took the title in the PING Star of the Future U8 category with a fantastic nine-hole round of five under par.

The eight-year-old took the crown by one shot from Craigielaw’s Fraser Walters at Gainsborough GC, home to tournament sponsor PING.

This capped an incredible week for eight-year-old Hayden after he won the Stowe School U11 Championship, finished third in the Wee Wonders at St Andrews and topped it all with the American Golf Championship.

The Gaudet Luce Golf Club member was delighted with his win, especially after finishing second last year.

“I feel happy. I played better than last year and am happy how I played,” he said. “My putting was the best part of my game.

“I’m going to come back and play the 18-hole competition next year and just do my best.”

There was also joy for Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College student Constance Brooks who came second in the Girls’ Gross score category, shooting a round of six over par.

She narrowly missed out on the title by three shots from Northampton’s Leah Ribano.

The 14-year-old said: “I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the American Golf Grand Final.

“The course was a good test and in amazing condition.

“The experience mirrored what I can imagine it would be like to be a professional. Even after travelling all around the country in my other golf competitions I haven’t come across another event which does this.”
