RISING star Joe Doyle led by example as he captained the Central All Stars to victory in a closely-fought tournament against a Great Britain Select team at Bishop Perowne School in Worcester on Sunday.

The Blessed Edward Oldcorne student lived up to his nickname of ‘The Golden Boy’ by securing one of the wins in the 6-4 contest with an excellent victory over Scottish national champion and Tri-Nations gold medallist Lennon Mulligan.

Entering the ring with his side 2-0 down, the 15-year-old went on the offensive from the first bell and overwhelmed his Glasgow opponent with a flurry of accurate body shots.

There was no let up in round two as the Doyle countered Mulligan’s jab with a series of sharp right-hand punches, which preceded a barrage of solid left hooks to the head and body of the Scot in the third to clinch the contest.

Also scoring a victory for Central All Stars was Worcester City Boxing Club’s Layton Butler, who put in a solid performance to defeat Ciaran Turner from the St Paul’s Boxing Club on points.

“The fight could not have gone better but I was pleased with my preparations and was confident I could beat an opponent who is very highly regarded,” said Doyle.

“For our team to bounce back from two fights down to win the tournament was excellent and I was honoured to lift the trophy at the end.”

Buoyed by his latest impressive win, Doyle heads up to Liverpool later this week for a training camp following his selection for the England Talent Programme.

He will be clocking up the miles with a three-day camp in Hull next week with additional ones to follow in Southampton and Middlesbrough.
