WORCESTER City made it six games without a league win last night (Tuesday) after a 3-0 home defeat to Leamington FC.
First half goals from Stefan Moore and Lee Chilton and a second half penalty from ex-City man Matt Dodd saw the visitors claim all three points and leave City rock bottom of the Skrill Conference North table.
Despite a hatful of chances at the other end, Carl Heeley’s men failed to find the back of the net once again, meaning his side have gone over 570 minutes without a league goal.
The two teams were welcomed onto the Aggborough pitch to the song ‘The Only Way Is Up’ by Yazz and the Plastic Population, and after just two minutes it should have been City living up to the title.
Ellis Deeney whipped in a corner from the right hand side that Aaron Williams headed goalwards, with the ball bouncing inside the six yard box Dior Angus tried to poke home before Josh Green prodded the ball narrowly over his own crossbar.
After nine minutes, the Brakes found themselves in front through former Aston Villa striker Moore. Neat play between Chilton and Dodd down the right wing saw the latter deliver a teasing cross to the unmarked striker to head in at the back post.
With 23 minutes on the clock City were in real trouble as poor defending enabled a wicked cross from Joe Magunda, which Chilton dispatched with ease at an empty far post to put Leamington in control.
As the half came to a close the hosts found renewed belief. A deflected Deeney effort was well saved by Tony Breeden before a Niall Thompson cross-come-shot was tipped round the post, Graham Hutchison heading the following corner over from inside the six yard box.
City had the chance to reduce the arrears after the restart as Danny Glover’s through ball found the run of Thompson who, after appearing to have his shirt pulled in the box, stayed on his feet to have his one-on-one saved by Breeden.
But the game was effectively over after 56 minutes. Sam Smith was adjudged to have handled in the box, after a Josh Hawker corner, and Dodd stepped up to stroke the penalty the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
More controversy followed as Deeney’s shot appeared to strike an arm in the Leamington penalty area, but appeals were waved away.
Manager Heeley, said: “I think if you watch the game we probably don’t deserve to lose 3-0, but the bottom line is they’ve scored three goals and we haven’t.
“We’ve absolutely dominated the game, created five or six times the number of chances they’ve created but we haven’t scored again, and the goals for column is a major concern.
“If we don’t start scoring goals we’re not going to win games, and we need to get that first goal because we’ve never got anything to defend and it’s a real problem.”
