Frustrated City hit by weather once again

Worcester Editorial 18th Jan, 2018   0

JOINT-bosses Lee Hughes and John Snape will be hoping their Worcester City side can pick up their winning start to 2018 when they welcome Rocester on Saturday.

The Blue and Whites’ stop-start beginning to the year continued last night when their trip to Stourport Swifts was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Having already been re-arranged once, the postponement means City have played just three times since November 25 and once in 2018.

City had hoped to build on their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lye Town at the Victoria Ground last Saturday.

The home side began on the front foot and Hughes was judged offside in the fifth minute as he met a cross from Alex Tomkinson.

Further chances came and went for the hosts with Mark Danks, Tomkinson and Mat Birley all denied all before the half-hour mark.

City were finally rewarded for their efforts soon after when Hughes received the ball on the right-hand side of the area before lashing home.

Tomkinson was once again denied while City keeper Nathan Vaughan had to be at his best to deny the visitors with two smart saves before half time.

In a quiet second half of very few chances, Hughes and Wayne Thomas attempted to add to City’s lead while Lee Chilton went close for the visitors but was thwarted by Vaughan as Lye pushed for a leveller.

City remain eight points off the top of the Midland Football League Premier Division but leaders Coleshill Town have played two games more.

Saturday’s visitors Rocester currently lie 21st in the table with just three wins in 20 league games and having conceded 54 goals, the second highest in the league. Kick off is 3pm.
