FOOTBALL: City league switch means Worcester derby with Raiders

Worcester Editorial 19th May, 2023   0

EAGERLY-ANTICIPATED local derbies will be on the cards in the Hellenic League Premier next season after Worcester City were moved into the same league as Worcester Raiders.

The Blue and Whites will resume the somewhat spicy rivalry in the 2023/24 campaign after City were switched in the FA’s league allocation process which was revealed on Monday (May 15).

Chris Cornes’ men will move from the Midland League Premier Division and City and Raiders will also be joined by Hellenic League Division One champions Pershore Town.

Relegated Southern League sides Cinderford Town, Highworth Town and Slimbridge will be playing in the division.

It will be the first time City and Raiders have gone head-to-head in a competitive league fixture as Cornes – who was dismissed as Raiders co-manager two seasons ago – pits his wits against a Raiders side led by Karl Gormley.

Raiders finished fourth last season behind champions Cribbs and a Malvern Town side promoted via a play-off against Highworth.

In addition to the promotion place for the champions, play-offs will return to the Hellenic League’s top tier next season.
