FA Cup dream is over for City

WORCESTER City’s FA Cup dream came to an end at Sincil Bank last night (Tuesday) with a 3-0 defeat to Skrill Conference side Lincoln City.

After a 1-1 draw at Aggborough on Saturday (October 26) the two sides had to battle it out again for a place in the first round of the FA Cup, but two first half strikes from Ben Tomlinson and a goal in the second from Bohan Dixon were enough to send The Imps through.

Carl Heeley’s men went into the game as the clear underdogs, up against full-time opponents, and that told with the hosts restricting City to just one shot on target, in stoppage time.

Lincoln started proceedings strongly and could have taken an early lead when Alan Power’s drive was tipped over the bar by Jose Veiga.

After 31 minutes the pressure eventually did tell, Todd Jordan whipped in a cross from the right and Tomlinson got ahead of Graham Hutchinson to divert the ball home off the underside of the bar.

A minute before half time and The Imps doubled their lead, Tomlinson again meeting a delivery, this time from Sean Newton, to head past Veiga.

Mid-way through the second half City enjoyed their best spell of the game, retaining possession with confidence but, ultimately, were unable to make it tell.

That lack of killer instinct came back to haunt them as the home side put the game to bed after 65 minutes, when Bohan Dixon’s sweetly struck half volley flew past Veiga.

Substitute Reece Hales gave some viewing for the 45 travelling fans when his effort was saved by Paul Farman, but Lincoln were too strong and booked their tie with Plymouth Argyle, claiming £12,500 in prize money.
