Deeney and Nti fire City to victory

WORCESTER City kicked off a pivotal week in their Skrill Conference North season by beating Vauxhall Motors 2-0 at Aggborough on Sunday (March 23).

Ellis Deeney and Daniel Nti struck in either half to secure all three points for the Aggborough men and secure their 15th clean sheet of the season.

There were home debuts for Swindon loanee goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell and striker Santiago Aloi, arriving on loan from Kidderminster Harriers, as City climbed back up to 14th in the league, 11 points clear of the drop.

Chances were few and far between in the opening half an hour with Wayne Thomas heading wide from an Nti flick before Ebby Nelson-Addy’s cross was nodded over by Aaron Brown.

The breakthrough came for the hosts after 36 minutes when captain Deeney robbed Tom Rutter in the middle of the park, played a neat one-two with Aloi before driving his 20-yard effort past a stranded Zac Jones.

The dangerous Aloi was involved moments later when he set up Nti in the box but the strikers half-volley whistled just past the far post.

City were causing The Motormen all sorts of problems and should have doubled their lead just after the restart when Nelson-Addy’s effort hit both the bar and the post before rebounding to Aloi whose goal-bound header was somehow palmed away by the scrambling Jones.

In a rare foray past the hosts back line, Bedwell had to be quick off his line to block a Steven Tames effort after the striker had got in behind Graham Hutchison.

The points were deservedly sealed after 88 minutes with the visitors pushing for an equaliser substitute Ethan Moore fed Daniel Nti on the break and City’s top scorer duly obliged to fire home his 15th goal of the season.

Worcester will look to carry their momentum into tomorrow nights (Tuesday) visit of Stockport County, before another crunch game at home to Histon on Saturday (March 29).
