WORCESTERSHIRE have been promoted back to English cricket’s top flight for a record seventh time – six years to the day since their last promotion.

The Pears picked up the second bonus point needed to secure promotion back to Division One of the LV= County Championship when they passed 300 against Yorkshire on Wednesday (September 27)

Skipper Brett D’Oliveira fell for a marvellous 103 just one run shy of the target, having earlier shared a 155 run stand with Kashif Ali (93) as the pair took the Pears from 67-4.

Alan Richardson’s side will return to Division One for the first time since 2018 when they were relegated for the sixth time in 14 years.

The elevation caps a hugely successful season for the Pears which has seen the club reach the quarter finals of both the Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Pears CEO said Ashley Giles said securing promotion to Division One of the LV=Insurance County Championship was a ‘huge achievement’ for the club and a testament to the work and dedication of everyone who has played their part.

Giles praised the environment created by Head Coach Richardson, who is celebrating his first season in charge by guiding the squad to two quarter-finals in white ball cricket and a top two finish in the Championship.

The champagne corks were popping amongst Worcestershire supporters after promotion was secured on day one of the match with Yorkshire at Headingley.

Giles said: “I’m incredibly proud of Alan Richardson and his coaching staff, the senior players and the whole squad on achieving promotion to Division One.

“This is a huge achievement for the club, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

“Alan has done a fantastic job since becoming Head Coach in November 2022. He has created a positive and supportive environment and has gotten the best out of every player.

“The senior players have also played a vital role, leading by example and setting high standards.

“This is a very special moment for the club, and I would like to thank everyone who has supported us along the way.

“We are now looking forward to competing in Division One next season.”
