CRICKET: Brooks joins Worcestershire on loan for Foxes four-day clash

DOUBLE LV=Insurance County Championship winner Jack Brooks has signed for Worcestershire on a short-term loan from Somerset

He will be in contention to play in Thursday’s County Championship fixture with Leicestershire at New Road.

The seam bowler has been brought in to strengthen the squad because of injuries to the pace bowling trio of Josh Tongue, Dillon Pennington and Pat Brown.

Brooks has enjoyed a successful career, including lifting the title in 2014 and 2015 with Yorkshire under Head Coach Jason Gillespie.

In those two seasons, Brooks played a massive role, taking 71 and 69 first class wickets, respectively.

Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chair Paul Pridgeon said: “The minimum you can sign a player on loan for is 14 days, but Jack is coming for red ball cricket only, so in effect, it is just for this one game against Leicestershire.

“We’ve got a few niggly injury problems with Josh Tongue, who has a side strain, Dillon Pennington, with his hamstring, and Pat Brown has tweaked a groin.

“We are down to four seamers, and Jack Brooks has got a lot of experience and is ideal for helping fill the gap we have at present.

“He has a lot of experience, has won Championship titles, and we’re confident he’ll do a good job.”

Worcestershire supporters will hope Brooks can repeat the form he showed at New Road in 2015 when he had match figures of 9-84.

He moved to Somerset in 2019 and, to date, has taken 519 first class wickets in his career at an average of 27.65.

Brooks has made one Championship appearance this season for Somerset against Lancashire at Taunton.
