City see off rivals Solihull

WORCESTER City made January a month to remember after deservedly dispatching local rivals Solihull Moors 3-1 at Aggborough on Tuesday (January 28).

Jasbir Singh spilled a powerful Steven Leslie drive over the line early on before Ethan Moore doubled the lead with a close range finish in the second half.

The visitors hit back almost instantly through Ryan Beswick, but they faced an uphill battle when Stuart Pierpoint received his marching orders for two bookable offences.

The man advantage paid dividends as Ebby Nelson-Addy sealed the three points with a break-away goal to secure a fourth win in five and lift City up to 17th in the Skrill Conference North – six points clear of the drop zone.

Worcester got off to the perfect start after two minutes and it was a horror show from Singh as he let Leslie’s crisp 20-yard drive out of his grasp and across the line.

The Moors keeper almost cost his side another goal ten minutes later when his poor clearance fell to Nelson-Addy, his persistence found Daniel Nti whose stinging drive was palmed round the post by Singh.

Carl Heeley’s men continued to carve open the play-off hopefuls and Singh redeemed himself after 21 minutes as Aaron Brown released Moore through the middle but City’s top scorer was denied by a fine save before Nti fired the rebound just over.

Leslie tested Singh once more a minute after the restart when his drilled free-kick was turned round the far post as The Blue and Whites continued to pepper the visitor’s goal.

Nti was next to try his luck as the onslaught continued. Ellis Deeney picked out the striker with a fine ball and he wriggled free of the defence before firing a low shot which was well saved yet again.

The second goal Worcester’s pressure deserved finally did come after 52 minutes when George Williams whipped in a great ball from the right which Moore brought down and, despite another fine save from Singh to deny Brown, Moore pounced on the rebound and fired into the corner for his 11th goal of the campaign.

The Moors halved the deficit just three minutes later with their first real opportunity of the game. Former City man Jay Denny played in Beswick who neatly curled his effort past Jose Veiga into the far corner.

Any hope Solihull had to get something from the game disappeared with ten minutes remaining when Pierpoint hauled back substitute Kristian Ramsey-Dickson and was shown a second yellow card by referee Sian Massey.

The points were made safe with virtually the last kick of the game as a ball out from the back found the pacey Ramsey-Dickson on the break, his unselfish pass found Nelson-Addy who rifled home via the crossbar to make it another great night for the Aggborough faithful.

City assistant manager Matt Gardiner, who was taking the place of the ill Heeley, said: “I am really pleased with the way the lads started, especially with the conditions at the moment.

“It’s a great strike from Steve Leslie, it’s good to see him back in and I thought he had a great 90 minutes under his belt. Everyone worked hard and we fully deserved the lead after a good start.

“I’m also really pleased for Ebby. He’s had to wait his time but he’s got in the team and on six or seven games on the run and the energy to go on that heavy pitch and the finish at the end I thought was fantastic and put the game away.”

City’s fine form will be tested once more when they welcome former Football League side Stockport County to Aggborough on Saturday (February 1).
