City ready for FA Trophy challenge

Worcester Editorial 13th Dec, 2013 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WORCESTER City will be looking to get back to winning ways when they travel to Aldershot in the FA Trophy second round tomorrow (Saturday).

The Skrill Conference North side head to The Recreation Ground on the back of a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Oxford City, but made it to this stage thanks to a vintage 3-0 victory away to AFC Telford United.

Like City, The Shots find themselves in the relegation zone in their respective league, the Skrill Conference Premier, and had to come through a first round replay with Weston-super-Mare to make it this far, winning 5-2.

The Blue and Whites are facing a potential defensive crisis ahead of the game with Shabir Khan (suspended), Richard Munday (hamstring), Sam Smith (knee) and Matt Regan (loan expired) all expected to miss out.

Captain Graham Hutchison hobbled off in the defeat to Oxford but is expected to be fit.

Speaking after the Oxford match Worcester boss Carl Heeley said they were looking forward to tomorrow’s game but admitted the league is still his side’s main priority.

“The next one’s a cup game and we’ll look forward to that but then we’ve got a busy Christmas period and we’ve got to get the performances to a consistent level to give ourselves the opportunity to win some games.

“We’ve earned a bit of money in the FA Trophy and we’ve got a good game to look forward to, but we haven’t picked up many league points and that’s the bread and butter, that’s what will define our position at the end of the season.

“I’d swap it (the FA Trophy tie) for three league points today, but it’s a distraction from the league and it’s getting performances and momentum and building up a little bit ahead of steam again to get a winning run together.”
