City through to next round of cup

WORCESTER City made it through to the FA Cup fourth qualifying round at the second time of asking after a dogged display saw off a brave Rugby Town on Tuesday night (October 15).

Two goals in the space of seven second half minutes were enough for City to secure their place in the next round of the competition, where they will face Lincoln City at Aggborough.

Danny Glover and a Tom Thorley penalty condemned a battling Town to defeat in the third round replay at Butlin Road, and meant City took home £7,500 in prize money.

As in Saturday’s match, which ended goalless, Dave Stringer’s men made the brighter start to proceedings, and twice threatened the home defence, with Richard Blythe having the best chance, but his effort was smothered by Jose Veiga.

City settled in the second half and made the breakthrough on 57 minutes after Glover’s fierce drive was saved by Niall Cooper but the striker followed up to finish from the edge of the box.

Seven minutes later and City were heading into the next round. Glover was again instrumental as he went to take on Rugby skipper Alex Gudger, who tripped him in the box and the referee awarded the penalty.

Captain Thorley confidently fired the penalty home to give City a two-goal cushion.

But after the goal Rugby didn’t let their heads drop, and were determined not to let their two-division gap become evident, as Justin Marsden curled just wide of Veiga’s post..

However despite plenty of pressure City stood firm and booked their place in the next round which takes place on Saturday, October 26.
